it was the comedian Paul Hogan who said "shrimps", as I recall. There are 20 million other Australians and chances are they say 20 million things. If there aren't enough coals on the barbie, then "coals" it will be.
between you, break open another can of xxxx - life is more valuable than a bust up over a shrimp or a lump of charcoal......

Only problem is ... we don't call them shrimps down here, we call them prawns - never quite worked out the reasoning behind paul saying that - maybe it's aimed at tourists - anyway the saying is 'put another shrimp on the barbie'
"Put another coal on the Barbie" Is the English version flossy, because we don't put shrimps on the barbie do we.?

I've also heard "Put another Burger on the Barbie" too.
You're both right really.

seekeers is correct. We don't call them shrimps. Hogan's ad seemed really stupid to most Australians.

I don't know anyone who would say to putter more coals on a barbie either. On the barbie means above the plate. The fuel goes under it.

We might chuck on another chop or another snag (sausage).
