no sound coming from desktop speakers on p.c.

I have a desktop p.c. and cannot get any sound out the speakers. I know it isn't the speakers that are at fault. I have gone into various setting to try to rectify the problem, but with no success....

Just having a bit of a dispute with my Dad. He says the Australians say "put more coals on the barbie" I say it is "put more shrimps on the barbie" Please can someone confirm waht...
