what do you all think of this story about a polar bear some animal rights activist thinks should be killed as it has been abandoned by its mother - it bought me to tears

sebtred - he may not have been serious, but why did a bear in another zoo get put to sleep for the same reason?

Why should a zoo spend time and money on an animal that is most likely to die in its infancy? Money thats why (which is a fair reason to me).

bigeye74 - so would you not take a sick animal to the vets for treatment if the prognosis was not favourable, as it could die anyway?

Yes, but I have family pets and operate as an individual and have emotional ties. A zoo however is a business which has to make money.

dont agree, a life is a life - and as we have interfered with their natural habitat, or taken an animal into captivation, we should do all we can to preserve life. I dont need emotional ties to save any animal that may need help.

Roger that pmjblue - perhaps its best that you don't ever run a zoo (not that I would do any better).

bigeye - no chance of that one - I dont agree with zoos, wild animals should be in the wild - but if we see fit to capture them and put them there, we should give them chance of a life - who can disagree with that.

jaber - thats a broad statement, is it child activists, racial activists, political activists or even animal activists you want to kill? Might as wel narrow it down or you'd be at it all day.

I am just amazed that any human being thinks they have a right to decide that this little bear should die! Does that follow, then, that abandoned children should be put down? Really, I never heard such nonsense! We are in the business these days of caring for animals and saving them where possible - and if this guy calls himself an 'Animal Activist' ... well maybe we should put him down?!!!!
