Elliemay, //It's not even up for discussion.//

Why on earth would you expect it to be up for discussion when St Paul, who founded the Christian Church, decreed that woman should remain silent? You surely don't expect the Catholic church to move with the times?
*Pixi, wonderful, but you don’t speak as a Muslim woman born into an eastern culture, so quite frankly, you are not qualified to speak for those that are. *

who was on about where muslims came from? the question was about religion ..... if people dont follow it properly thats down to the individual ....

i have maybe 9 sister in laws and i have no idea how many other female inlaws in the middle east.... all the ones i know have happy lives
And since you've never used an airport other than to use the loo, you would of course know these women who were brought up in an eastern Muslim culture very well indeed. Get real Pixi!
lol naomi you are struggling to debate here and just making silly comments

we all know what goes on in each others life, we spend ages chatting on the phone and i do have in laws in this country who i see regularly..believe me if one of the men so much as farts out of turn the women are on the phone telling everyone about it and the family members are round the house having words....
Catholicism must be close to the top of any list of religions which treat women badly.
No struggle here, Pixi - and I do believe you - because I can guarantee I've spoken to more Muslim women than you ever have and that's what their lives consist of - and it's nothing to be proud of.

I'm going to bed. Good night all.
Why Sandy?
I agree, SandyRoe.
Any 'bible's ' usually written by the homophobic mysogynists of the era and is bound to discriminate against women. Keep them pregnant then they can't have a life or career of their own.

'suppose.
Women are ok for doing parish work and mundane tasks delegated by priests e.g they make good housekeepers. But keep them subservient and never let them become priests seems to be the attitude.
Telling women that birth control is wrong. A crowd of middle aged bachelors have no business in the bedrooms of married women.
Their stance on abortion is strange too.
My "second family" live in Albania and are Muslim. They abhor radical Islam and the women certainly don't cover up, walk 5 steps behind the men or any other such nonsense. My "family" are well educated and have a doctor, a high court judge and an artist (all women) in their number. Albanians value education for all, not just the men, and most speak at least two languages.

i think you forget to realise that wearing a burkha is a cultural thing not a religious thing. it does not actually state in the quran to cover you face. yes, you should cover your head when you are outside, but not your face. If you asked most muslim womens they chose to wear the burkha. Of course, considering how many muslims there are in the world there may be some that are forced, but not all muslims are good, like not all atheists, christians, buddhists, hindus etc are good. Than again they would never show any of the good muslims as much as they show the bad muslims on TV.

overall my point is that islam is not sexist, yes there are people in the religion that are sexist and misguided, but than there are sexist people all over the world, like there are racists, homophobics etc.
sith, why should it be necessary for anyone either men or women to cover their head, unless it's to keep the rain off with a hat, or even the sun. seems a strange way for any religion to behave. Telling people how to live their lives, what to eat, how to think, what to wear, i can't see how that is right in any way.

I now live in an area which has become predominately Muslim, where the majority of women are covered head to toe, wearing the burkha, hijab, but the menfolk go around dressed in western clothing mostly, seems a hypocritical religion to me, then again i feel the same about most organised religion. Catholicism being in the frame for it's appalling stance on birth control, and physical and sexual abuse from some of it's priests and nuns over the years.
Sith, //i think you forget to realise that wearing a burkha is a cultural thing not a religious thing.//

Who forgets to realise it? I certainly don't. And actually these days I believe it's become more of a political symbol than a cultural one.
this is partly religious and partly cultural, but can't see how this is allowed to go on in this day and age.
It's prevalent in Britain, even though it is illegal here.
