I personally don't think they should, but what they should do is make sure whoever they recruit they are the proper person for the job, regardless of the fact that they are from the ethnic minorities.

Incidentally why do they always assume that the ethnic minorities have a black skin, if the exercise is to make the Met more representative of London, then we should have Indian officers, Chinese officers, Polish officers, Romanian officers, Bulgarian officers, Jewish officers, etc, etc and of course an equal mix of male and female officers from all these groups.

Oh sorry I missed out others from all the various sexual orientations.

sp1814, are there not as many people in 'ethnic minorities' who want to serve their communities as there are in the wider population?
I'm sure a Hindu or Rastafarian officer could, ''ello, 'ello,'ello' with the best of them.
AOG, people need to see the police as 'their police'. If some of the officers looked liked locals that might be easier to do.

Best then for all the communities to have their own police force, but then why not? some already have their own Police Association.

Ah...but even if there *are* the same proportion of non-whites who want to join the Met, because the ethnic population of London is not 50%, they still wouldn't be able to meet the 50/50 rate.

I suspect that the police are still mistrusted by ethnic minorities in London, which means that as a career option, the force is not seen as attractive.

There's also the 'self fulfilling prophecy' thing. If one looks at the upper echelons of the Met and sees only white male faces, it could subconsciously plan the seed that "I don't stand a chance getting on there".

I suspect the same held true for women, at least in the past...until strong female leaders started being promoted through the ranks.

There is no doubt they are keen to attract racial/ethnic minorities

Having been mistaken for a minority - ( Arab )
I cant say I liked it much
I agree with NJ. Positive discrimination actively endorses separation.
"Positive discrimination only leads to the suspicion that someone from an ethnic minority only got the job because of their ethnicity not because of their skills or qualifications."

and in a lot of case thats exactly why they did get the job, because of skin colour and quotas.....
