Any knitters out there??

I found an old carrier bag today with some of my mums knitting magazines and some needles, so thought I would attempt to make something. The things is I saw a chart in one of them with 2 lots of needle sizes - UK and metric. For example it says UK7 = Metric 4.5mm, UK6 = Metric 5mm.

There are 2 pairs of needles still in their packets - and on them they say 5.0 and 6.0, so is that UK or metric sizing??

That sounds like metric sizes.
defo metric, as 'old' sizes don't have .0!

and what a lovely idea!

Thankyou ladies! soooo, just to re-cap, if it doesnt actually have mm on the needle after the mber then it should be metric?? because all the patterns are in mm and they aren't very old?
metric the uk sizing doesn't have the decimal point
Question Author
So why dont they have mm on them??
On older needles the size is just 5 or 6 on metric you would have 5.0 and 6.0.

Ahh, so both pattern books and needles are metric - the needles just havent put the mm on.

Well, my mum loved knitting, she taught me when I was a little girl, and sadly she died aged just 59, but in her final days she started knitting again, and the bag was one of the things that I wanted to keep. so just for her I am going to try and make something from it, even though I havent done it for years.
I think that's lovely! My Mum used to spin, and I've got alot of her wool all neatly wound into hanks. I really should do as you are doing and knit it up!! But fabric is more my thing---- quilting and stuff, but maybe one day------.!

Busy knitting wee jumpers for "fish and chip babies" Smow. Apparently there are areas of the world where babies have no clothes and go home from hospital etc. wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm hence the name. Also doing hats for the same reason - think these are going to Peru for the street children.
I also knit for babies - but I supply our local hospital with hats etc for premature

sorry, link didnt work. julia roberts is well known for her love of knitting, and tom hanks had pranked her on set about it;-)
Thats a lovely idea Smowball. I got back into knitting just before christmas, son wanted a festive jumper, took a bit to get back into doing it. finished it just in time. Best present ever he didn't know I was doing and the look on his face was great. I'd love to crochet but don't know anyone who can and the books and videos don't seem to help me.
Mojay knitting for the hospitals is great. One of mine was 4lb and I did't have a hat to fit her, one of the midwives took her measurements and next day a hat that fitted was made, I was so touched. Still got it 20 years later.
Thats a lovely thing to do...wish i could master it xx
I spent hours learning to knit as I am left handed. I knitted mic an Aran jumper and he loved it. When I was at work he put it in the washing machine and then the tumble dryer. He was gutted to see the outcome. Not as much as me though. I said if he wanted another one go to Jaeger. This was many years ago.
