Self Scan Checkouts Are A Nightmare

I went shopping to Morrisons with my parents and what should have been an easy task took over 20 minutes with there being 1 person serving at the self scan checkouts of 8 people who all had problems at the same time such as incorrect item in bag, take the last item out of the bag item not recognised etc etc. Never again it should come with a health warning for people suffering from high blood pressure not to use them.

To get back to the post, my main concern is that they will result in job losses which is why I refuse to use them
Shouldn't that be Baaa boo :-)
Tesco near me here in Norfolk often has staff on to do the scanning and packing, two people! They then often have " a nice long chat" with the customer, blocking the till. Bread rolls infuriate me, I can't, supposedly, just enter 4 rolls, I'm supposed to say what sort they are! Needless to say they all go in as the same.
I wasn't best pleased when the self-service gave me 95p change all in 5p coins.
Well sad Psybbo! Was in my local (walking distance) Tesco Express yesterday.
One of the staff went around the store collecting the stuff from a list of a lady with a walking frame. Then opened another checkout to deal with the purchases. Heartwarming. If only more people had been aware!
Nooo Tony! Would mean a 20 minute bus ride into town anyway, after a 15 minute walk to the bus stop.
Ah right, Daisy.
Advances in technology will always mean changes in the way we live, but I doubt that self-scanners will ever completely take the place of a checkout assistant.

I remember my sis, many years ago, going mad about the introduction of scanners for the checkout staff, because of the inevitable job losses. I wonder if there are any shops that still do it the old-fashioned way (other than Dev in the Corrie corner shop). :o)
Most corner shops still price-tag goods.
Do any supermarkets price-tag goods?
Anyone old enough to remember when there no self-service shops. You went in, queued up and when it was your turn the assistant fetched all the goods for you, wrote the price down on a piece of paper then totalled it at the end. There was rarely a mistake.
Yes Blackadder, as a small kid my mom used to send me to the corner shop, and it was done as you describe.

They could also add up and subtract in £.s.d. Even in decimal currency I doubt whether the majority of cashiers today could calculate the change without an electronic till to tell them.
My mam used to send me, as a youngster, to the corner shop for a packet of 5 Park Drives, and sometimes for just a single cigarette when funds wouldn't stretch to 5.

There were no worries that I might be smoking the fags myself. Happy days. :o)

(Sorry to digress, Gordie).
BlackadderV I used to work on a shop like that, people would queue and I'd get their groceries
Blackadder, that's probably why we used to ( well at my school anyway ) have a mental arithmetic test on a regular basis in maths lessons.
To echo Mrs Chap, my dad would often send me over the road to buy a single razor blade, also my mam would send me out to get 2 eggs. You can't buy things in small quantities any more. I have to buy six bread buns and throw four away.
Safeway have cut out half their tills because of this self-service lark. It's ok it you have only one or two items to buy at the self service till but the weekly shop would take ages to put through and pack at the same time. It hasn't saved on the staff either because two or more are in attendence to make sure that no one fiddles or if someone is stuck (me) with a weighing problem. The queues for the tills are always very busy.
