In pot grown trees the tap root curls round inside the pot and it grows quite happily provided it is kept cool and well watered. Trees that are dug up and potted have very little chance of survival although they may be easier to keep watered while they are in the house A pot grown tree will need potting on as it grows but will be fine for many years. I have tried Nordmann trees but find that they shed too but I do keep my house warm.
There was an article in the DT the other day that tomatoes exhibit distress when they are picked...so why not trees?
I prefer a real tree...with roots on, then I think I live in a forest at times - got to get the chainsaw going for some logging this weekend. This year, it's a hygge tree - which has been up all year.

For anyone who finds a lack of space an issue, I would recommend a small conifer, as the centre piece of a table decoration.
Chameacyparis thyoides is a good choice and looks just like a compact, miniature xmas tree. It can be grown on in successive pots or planted out in the garden after the festivities are over.
Pot-grown and potted are two different things, the latter dug up and bunged in a pot, possibly hours later.
I've had a small pot-grown for several years now!
