I like on occasion a g&t or a drop of red wine, then I prefer a cup of tea or a tin of ginger beer, was never in love with booze, seen too much damage in families to 'love it', its a curse and my circle of friends tend to prefer meeting for a coffee rather than drinking alcohol, I think it can be the company you keep too that can make you drink too much.

I have never developed a taste for alcohol, or its effects, so have been tee-total all my life.
It's interesting to see that the teenage bingers of years ago are now moving through the age range, so the serious drinkers are now the mid-forties and up, and when they pass through, and the current generation move up, alcohol consumption will plummet, and amen to that.
I have said countless times, I would have it banned off the planet tomorrow if I could.

AH's analysis assumes that everyone has the same drinking profile as they age

The constantly possed years of teens and twenties gives rise to occasional binges ( rugby matches eetc where all the adults have the same idea) - except in gay men who go on sinking large quantites ad infintum.

I have a completely fascist uncompromising utterly unreasoning unsustainable hatred of alcohol, but you would never know that from me unless we knew each other extremely well - by which time you would know that it's not a deal-breaker in friendship terms.
I mix all the time with musicians who live on the edge of most drug activities, alcohol included, and it does not colour our relationships in the slightest - I am entirely live-and-let-live, and try really hard not to adopt the moral high ground on anything - alcohol included.

I worked behind a bar for a lot of years and used to like a drink but my drinking and dancing days are over now.I take strong painkillers and they don't mix with booze at all.The last drink I had was at Christmas and then only a small whisky to be sociable.I think if I was to whack a few drinks down now me of an evening I'd pass out ..lol.
The Weatherspoons near me sell far more coffee and soft drinks than booze. I would say 60% of those in there are not drinking alcohol.
A pint of good Real Ale is £1.89 , on a Friday you can get Fish ,Chips and peas plus a pint of ale for £4.25 , that is less than the fish and chip shop charges for fish and chips on it's own! If you want coffee you just pay 99p for the first cup and you can help yourself to unlimited free refills from 9am to 2pm.
A pint of good Real Ale is £1.89 , on a Friday you can get Fish ,Chips and peas plus a pint of ale for £4.25 , that is less than the fish and chip shop charges for fish and chips on it's own! Indeed Mikey and that’s where I shall be off to shortly. Mrs NJ and I have been busy today and cannot be bothered to cook. Thursday night is “Curry Night” so a choice of about five or six dishes.
Yes I don’t understand some of the criticisms of Mr Martin’s pubs. I have a choice of three, each within a ten minute bus ride. They are all clean and presentable and what they do they do well. I’m a Real Ale aficionado (CAMRA member for over thirty years) and Wethers’ keep their beer well. When travelling we often seek out the local ‘Spoons for a bit of pub grub. It’s not Haute Cuisine but you gets what you pays for.
Mr Martin must be doing something right. Shares in his company (of which I own a handful) have risen 50% since this time last year and he seems to be managing to open new pubs when many others are closing. One of the reasons for that may be that he does not open them in the middle of nowhere in locations where you can only get to by car or a twice weekly bus service.
