divebuddy - //The only thing an increase in gender reassignment surgery tends to underline is that there is more gender reassignment surgery. //

I am not at all sure that statement actually makes sense, and I certainly don't under stand what it means - if you care to explain, please do.

// That we can do it, doesn't mean that we should. //

Indeed not, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't either.
I have certain sympathy with the thoughts of rocky.
We do not know chromosome configuration of our subject but as he was born with uterus and ovaries then i bet he has XX chromosomes and hence is female.
Now......he thinks he is male. Why? How does he know what a male feels like....he plays with boys, plays football, dresses and frocks do nothing for him and I presume he has menstruation (periods)

Unless they is tangible evidence to the contrary, she is a female, the only evidence that we have, is what he tells us.
Is that enough?
Not for me it isn't and reconstructive surgery on the suggestion of a Psychiatrist is not good enough and poor use of tax payers money.

Just my opinion.
Sqad - Given that any tax payers' money is being used by a doctor who is probably more qualified, certainly than me, and possibly than you, who has far more access to appropriate information than a button-pushing point-and-hoot parp in the Mail, I'd be rather more inclined to go with his assessment of what is required.

/Gender dysphoria is a recognised medical condition, for which treatment is sometimes appropriate. It's not a mental illness.//

Dysmorphia..........mental conditions are considered medical conditions and it is a mental disorder in that, as far as i know, there are no investigations that confirms the diagnosis.
Hoot parp. Is that a flatulent Owl.
Straight quote from the NHS ( hence the //).
A-H as i have often told you much of medicine is a matter of opinion....if one can convince a Psychiatrist that you have a mental disorder, which in my opinion isn't difficult, then on going treatment is a combination of opinions between Psychiatrist and surgeon. It would be quite easy to find a Psychiatrist who wouldn't agree with the first opinion, not an unusual occurance.
mamy....LOL...OK...it must be correct then.
I disagree.
I would neither argue the case against the NHS or a qualified surgeon such as yourself,

As with most things in life and medicine, it will vary between people.
Mamy....LOL......exactly.
Some opinions being in the majority and some in the minority.

Perhaps you thought I was commenting on this case in particular.

I wasn't.

I don't think this surgery means that Hayden will be a bad parent in future, nor do I think she's being selfish.

Having children is the very opposite of being selfish. You assign time, love, energy, hopes and fears to another human being for the rest of your life.

That to me, isn't selfish.
"if one can convince a Psychiatrist that you have a mental disorder, which in my opinion isn't difficult"

Lord.

You posited:

If you want gender surgery on NHS why not have a similar system to people on health related benefits - interview by independent (sic) doctor. Only if that doctor authorises it will the operation etc. take place.

In order to go ahead with treatment on the NHS the patient needs to see their GP who will refer them to a gender identity clinic. They will have to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria before they are eligible for treatment.

During this process, they will have an assessment with a psychiatrist who will make the diagnosis.

I think that's the same as your proposed.
'proposal'.
'if you were born with a penis you are a man, born with a vagina a woman. No amount of stitching things up and turning things inside out can change that fact.'

Sums it up perfectly IMO

Once a man always a man, once a woman always a woman

The poor child will suffer endless bullying over this
AOG- removed the one in Media for you.
//I’m not surprised NHS doctors refused to freeze her eggs.//

Should have just frozen her egos.

That it's diagnosed by a psychiatrist shows it IS a mental condition. I agree with sqad's posts. I think patients are being allowed to mislead themselves in thinking they can change something they can't.
