No...it doesn't mean it is a mental illness! The psychiatrist accesses the mental state of the patient and if they have any doubts about the mental state then the surgery would be refused.
joeluke - that is a wonderfully straightforward and simple assessment of the way genders operate, and the entire human race is created.

The sheer simplicity must give you massive comfort, because it means you don't have to consider the issue any further at all.

So don't let the fact that is as wrong as it is simple get in the way of you thinking it is true.
The psychiatrist has to diagnose it, ummm
Ummmm

So what physical abnormalities or abnormal laboratory investigations are diagnostic of Body Dimorphism?

If the answer is NONE then by definition it is a mental condition.
Some interesting opinions here.

Shows what a fraught subject this is.

I doubt there will ever be consensus.

Got Y chromosomes ? You're a bloke. Get rid of them and maybe I'll call you a girl.
Got XX chromosomes ? You're a girl. Get yourself a set of XY chromosomes, and I'll call you a bloke.
You are born what you are born, and no amount of hormones or surgery will change that.
I think this woman should have been given a choice. A baby or gender reassignment surgery.

like a lot of people in these selfish times we live in Shen wants her cake and eat it. If she wants to be a man the next be a man that can't have children. There are plenty of them around.
Cassa, I agree. She does want her cake and eat it.
Naomi - I agree too - but is that a reason to deny her what she wants?
andy-hughes, contrary to her belief, it's not all about her. She needed to sort her brain out before considering parenthood - but she hasn't.

As I suspected, your view is based on your own moral interpretation of what is right and wrong in this situation - and the moral aspect is surely for the individual to decide?
andy-hughes, //the moral aspect is surely for the individual to decide? //

Is it? There's one 'individual' who is being ignored in all this - the baby - who can't give an opinion.

That is obviously true, but does the lack of a voice from the baby give strangers the right to make a moral decision based on their own personal moral code, and then enforce it on another stranger?

In an ideal world, no – but we are not living in an ideal world. This woman isn’t being forced to do anything.
