Here's a thought mikey. There are in the region of 100million AK47 assault rifles in existence world wide. How many do you suppose are in the hands of civilians in the UK, America, China, Australia, Canada, or even the EU. When you have asked yourself that, then ask yourself where you think they perhaps are. You may have more support if you turned you pop eyed zeal to controlling those deadly weapons, and preventing "unavoidable deaths" in Africa and the Middle East. Not least Palestine.

Is there such a thing as a 'hair trigger' on guns? How much pressure would be needed to fire an ordinary one?
If I may jump in front of our two firearms pundits I can confirm that the trigger pressure can be adjusted on a firearm by the simple expedient of a small screw being turned within the trigger guard. It is measured by poundage. Usually a default trigger pull is about 3lbs but depends on the user and can be adjusted
Quite a few shotguns in particular,for some reason, are notorious for having a worse than useless safety catch.At your peril load a shotgun,snap the action shut with the safety on and then drop the butt plate lighty on the ground and it can often discharge.. :-(

the review mentions the unbending nature of the kevlar jacket but at the time, the pistol was said to be hair trigger and unknown to the one handling it.

retrocop - your terminally dull waffle and dry statistics in defence of your hobby does nothing to alter the facts of the tragic incident quoted in the OP - a mother has been careless enough to leave a loaded gun within reach of her toddler, and she has died as a result.
No amount of defence of gun club owners in the UK alters the fact that this happened because negligent adult ignored basic safety regarding firearms and child restraint in cars.
If you seriously think she was one of your defended 'responsible' gun owners who buy and keep guns to shoot targets with, then I suggest you are on thin ice.
If this woman had bought a gun to target shoot, she would have been taught gun safety from the start, and the gun would not have been loaded and under her car seat.
I would suggest that in common with millions of other Americans, she bought and carried the gun for personal self-defence.
So again, I repeat that your endless stats and defence of UK gun club weapon owners is meaningless in the context of this thread.

I recall many accidents with firearms and also negligent discharges. Very easy under pressure. Been there I suppose haven't you?
On my Body Guard Protection course the class was split into A and B cadre.
'A' cadre was on the range being taught drawing from the holster. A new discipline to the usual 'gun ready' stance.My B cadre was in the classroom being taught gun shot trauma and first aid to deal with blood loss,shock etc.
A student from A cadre burst into the classroom and asked the F.A. instructor to attend the range as a student had discharged his firearm when drawing from the holster and his
finger was around the trigger. He shot himself through the hip. All the F.A. class I was in,including the instructor thought it was a drill and laughed. It wasn't.
On a range refresher qualification we had the famous 'Whistle chain Ken' who was a member of our protection team.
He preferred the cross draw method and had his holster on his left hip.He reached across with his right hand when the snap target presented itself and drew his revolver across his body to eye level. The spur on the hammer caught on his tunic whistle chain and pulled and released the hammer to discharge a round in the cylinder.With the best will in the world even experienced firearms officers will experience a unexpected discharge. No professional will talk about an 'accidental discharge'. It will be a 'negligent discharge' or 'Murphy's Law' or a defective firearm. Worn sear or spring but you would know that wouldn't you PP?

There are a load of citizens in the U.S. who are obliged to defend themselves because they live in the boonies. My sister taught in an Indian reserve in Golden.Up in the Northern Territories.Canada. She got called one night by a student who told her his mum had been stabbed to death by his drunk native Indian Dad. She arrested the murderer at gunpoint until the mounties attended two days later by skidoo to take custody of the murderer.You have no clue what happens in the real world. If you and your family lived in a farmstead that was 3 hours drive from the local police station you would be dumb not to have protection for them or perhaps you would rather try to talk them to death before they shot you and your family to death. The American NRA is more powerful thus far than any U.S. President has ever been and you and Mikey's cant is pointless so why don't you be a little more pro active about what's happening on your doorstep?

What this and no doubt other tragedies does is send out a message , if you borrow someone's car then search it thoroughly before you place your children inside.
There should be a basic intelligence test for purchasing a gun - I wonder if the boyfriend who owned both car and gun will face charges as a result of this?
