Anybody remotely surprised by this ? I can't remember the last time I shopped at BHS....about 15 years ago I think, to buy a bath towel.

Oh, yes, Prudie. I remember the hats, now. My friends and I used to do the same thing and laugh at each other.
Prudie, we used to do the same in c and a, I still can't take hats seriously!
My pal and I travelled down to Nottingham for my brother's wedding. My dad took us into town on the day of the wedding. Alison and I tried hats on everywhere and it was fun. Dad then asked which one we were buying - Alison looked at him in total disbelief and advised him that we had no intention of buying a hat. Men - there is so much that they don't understand.

:-)
I agree HC, I see in the future most shops will be sold off by the landlords and reverted back to residential rather than A1, or A2. A lot of the high street stores are under 'internal only' repairing leases now and the repair costs to LL's for roofing and damp issues is extremely high, so they will start to sell off.
In the meantime, the quick turnarounds will be A3-5 - cafes and fast food as planning is easier to obtain and the income easier, especially now that the cafe culture is growing and people are spending more time in restaurants to catch up with friends and family. However, leasing a flat above such fast food sites is less appealing to new tenants due to the noise and opening hours, so the Landlords's income will drop if they have more than one floor to rent out with less interest. Eventually they will cut their losses and move onto residential only properties and the high street's will become part of councils re-development schemes but in a different light - less emphasis on trade, and more on creating nice areas to live.
I can never wear hats so that was a pointless hobby
(reminds me, who was that comedian who pulled a bowler right down his face and couldn't speak properly)
Jimmy Cricket
Thanks hc but I've looked and not him, probably around in 70s, had a bowler hat that he pulled right down and would blow raspberies or do somthing odd with his lips, spoke with a lisp)
Why is there not a public out cry that another Great British institution is sinking without a trace? What about all the job losses?

It is a shame to be sure Islay, but what can we do?
A couple of my friends worked at Alders department store for years before that closed it's doors and they were made redundant. If money is not being made, business's fold.
It's not only the high street that is suffering, redundancies are being made everywhere unfortunately, my partner having been made so last year.
Brilliant Tilly and thanks Mikey
It's not just changes in shopping habits that makes these stores close, it's exorbitant high street rents that really destroy them.

Its worth pointing out the Freddie has had a much wider career than one might of thought. Like most comedians, he makes a very good straight actor.

My local High St isn't suffering .It's a bustling thriving place with lots of independent shops and some chains.
This is more to do with the fact that BHS was sold off for a quid to a load of people who have no idea how to run a retail enterprise and just wanted to sit back and let the money roll in without actually doing anything .
I like BHS, especially their Christmas shop. Hope it doesn't close in my town .
Maybe the Government could step in and save the jobs?

Why do you think that is Shane, when most are suffering like mine, which just seems to be Bookies, Estate Agents, Charity Shops , and Take-Away/Café's?
