Anybody remotely surprised by this ? I can't remember the last time I shopped at BHS....about 15 years ago I think, to buy a bath towel.

I get free parking at the local BHS. The store doesn't appeal to the young either for clothes or homeware and has stopped selling the 'traditional' clothing that some of the elderly prefer so it has really narrowed its market.
What they stock is good quality and value, though. I'll be sorry to see it go

what you've said is probably true mikey. the uk retail economy is 100% road based, and high street locations are totally unsuited to modern logistics, where narrow streets and awkward goods-in areas mean that the larger trucks necessary to take advantage of economy of scale just cannot be used. plus town councils are their own worst enemy when it comes to the outrageous level of car park charging. no wonder so many town centres are empty.

Surely, companies should be folded up as soon as debt threatens the staff's pensions? It's deferred salary, for services rendered, not a perk, to be considered secondary to other creditors.

Another one bites the dust. Not surprising though as business rates and rents are extortionate these days. It takes new stores months if not years to break even after a decent shopfit, and most leases on the high street are for 10 yrs with a 5 yr break now, with dilapidations costs hitting a peak if leases are surrendered early due to poor sales through lack of footfall.
New companies moving into empty high street properties are demanding large lease assignment deals or high premiums from the previous tenants (not the landlords) just to get a good head start on the bills.
No wonder everything is moving online - the overheads for high street shops are incredible now. I honestly don't know how local corner shops manage to cover the costs.

...I wonder what will happen to our highstreets TRT? Do you think they will be knocked down and 're-generated' into green and open spaces? Just musing really, the closure and demise of all high street shopping eventually is no real surprise and will come. Will it all be coffee shops soon do y'think? or bike stores? parking, or something else?
I think high streets will go back to the way they used to be - a large number of residential properties with some 'essential' shops such as small grocers, coffee shops and bars. People won't travel to town to do their shopping, it will be retail parks with large car parks out of town and online shopping.
