HGV Drivers Fines for having Illegals in their trailers, I do not condone the Illegal carrying of these people, I do feel for the Innocent Driver who is threatened by some of these people, it is not the Drivers fault these people are entering the trailer, It's the French Security / Port Police for not doing their job properly, what would you do if threatened if you did that job for a living? a friend of mine came in from Europe well before this trouble got out of hand, he was on the M25>>M1 when he noticed a hand waving from his curtain sider, he pulled into Toddington Service area & contacted the police, what more can the driver expected to do? It's been said some EU Drivers have been seen excepting a sum of £1600 because their wage is that low, they take the chance, they paid the price, what's your thought's?

It ia all very well blaming the French side, but when the lorries touch British soil it is our problem. Clearly the problem is our security if illegals enter our country this way.
Passing the buck on this one is done by our politicians who have failed us.
I 'vaguely' heard that report. Did it say that foreign firms aren't paying the fines? I might have been mixing up 2 different stories.

Gromit, the problem is in France that's when the entre the trailer, so how do you make out it's our problem? as said, some Drivers lock & seal their trailers well before the entre the French Port & It's there as you know they break into the trailer.

Yes, some forms are not going to pay Svejk, why should they when it's all down to the French lack of security.

I don't think that anyone can deny that there are a 'few' drivers who will try and profit by it, but it does seem rather harsh that when a driver has apparently done all his checks then finds he has illegals on board and contacts the Police to have them arrested is himself fined for carrying them. By doing that it does appear the drivers are being used as cash cows and certainly does not encourage anyone to report stowaways if they discover them this side of The Channel.
Check the lorry again when it is onboarded. Any illegals shold be then rounded up.

Although easy to blame the French we could also do border checks in the UK using dogs. Any illegls found back on next ferry to France as that is a safe country and we would know it was where they were from.

But whilst in the EU and subscribing to the ECHR with an Army of scum lawyers milking the system for all it's worth and a Prime Minister without a spine we, the taxpayer, does not stand a chance.
Would it be impracticable to search every lorry before it went onto a ferry or into the tunnel?
It can't be right that drivers are fined for something they know nothing about.
I agree Sandy, we cannot continue to prosecute 'innocent' UK drivers especially when the foreign ones dont pay (and we are too weak to impound the lorry until they do). Unfortunately of course, as in any barrel, there are some rotten ones and since the rotten ones dont wear stripy jerseys and a mask we cannot tell who is who.

Perhaps the Lorries should be searched on the Ferry or Eurostar and any illegals found not allowed off?
Once again our politicians think more of foreigners than they do of their own people.

Once again the British citizen is expected to pay, when are these illegal immigrants, going to be forced to pay, after all it is them who are the real criminals in this affair? They trespass, inflict damage to these lorries and also contaminate the goods.

They should be interned in Labour camps, and before the usual suspects start shouting "what you mean like the Nazi or Russian Labour Camps" NO!

They should be marched off every day to carry out various unpaid jobs, such as washing down the heavy goods vehicles, they are so keen to use as their transport into the UK.
fine drivers, fine landlords. Soon anyone who sees anyone suspicious and doesn't report it will be fined. Excellent way to raise government funds while lowering taxes.
Now, if the authorities could find a way to penalise those who sell food to these foreign swarms they'd be starting to get to grips with the problem.

They should be fed on the food they have contaminated.
On the BBC's ;local news for East Anglia the other day, they were talking to a coach driver who'd found some of these people in his luggage compartment and reported them. Our Border police, stout fellows, still fined him £2000 for each of them. So the next bloke who finds some won't bother reporting it and will just let them go.

Really clever.

So going back to my OP, the French are NOT doing their job right, what's the point in checking the HGV half Way across the channel? The Ferry is going one way, Dover, They should not have got into a secure Trailer in the first place, the seal / lock is there for a reason, an offence has been committed & committed at the port of Calais.
Why don't they fit portable carbon dioxide detectors to the trailers linked to an audible alarm system? If the drivers/haulage companies are being fined £2000 per person, the detector would soon pay for itself?
