I agree with Sherrard - it's attention seeking, making herself indispensable, giving the child something no one else can, even the father.

1. That's not actually what I said.

2. I must have missed the bit where the "recommendations" say thay parents should abandon the idea of "weaning" their young.

3. I also missed the bit where the recommendations say that children should be given a mixed solid food and breast milk diet until they are five ... or eight. Is that what the "recommendations" actually say?

Because if the "recommendations" (other than the "recommendations" of deluded, attention seeking women) do suggest that children should not be weaned off breast milk until the age of five plus, then I will concede that my point was wrong.

Ironically, I really want this woman to be right.

Just supposing breast milk did actually make a discernable contribution to a person's intelligence!

The venerable educational institutions, with their teaching techniques refined over the generations, have got it all wrong. The real secret is ... breast milk.

Instead of selling their photos to dodgy websites, lactating women could sell their milk to health food companies. Getting pregnant and lactating could be a whole new career path for school leavers.

But I speak as someone who has not had children, and who was bottle fed and packed off to boarding school ... so what would I know. Presumably, nothing.

If breastmilk is the wonderstuff that makes kids intelligent, I think expressing and pouring it on their cornflakes would be a better solution than breastfeeding a school aged child.

But that's just my humble opinion ;)

I loved breastfeeding (though would never judge bottle feeding) but I stopped when my body hinted that I should stop. Periods returning was the hint.

I don't see any tablet of stone handed down by any deity to say at what age breastfeeding has to stop; but there must be an optimum time based of past medical experience. There is a danger the child won't develop mentally properly and keep a bond that doesn't help them in life. It has to be considered weird to go much beyond the norm.

I am inclined to agree with the view that this is based on some attention-seeking on the part of the mother.

It paralells with people who are celibate, and feel the need to share that information with the nation via the media - again, it does feel like attention-seeking.

The obvious issues lie with the unusual upbringing these children are receiving, as against the perceived norms of society, which can mean that the children receive mixed messages about parental roles.

This extends to the fact that the father sleeps in another bed - not a problem in itself, but his expressed feelings of exclusion and isolation seem to infer an imbalance in the marital, and parental relationships from his side.
