To keep the camera off Rachel..boooooo
They add an extra bit of interest, I suppose.
Some of them are funny and entertaining, while I fast forward through the anecdotes of some others.
I used to like Jo Brand and Pam Ayers whenever they were on.
The "point" is to fill out the time with something different and hopefully make it more entertaining.
I only watch nowadays when I think the guest will be interesting; it's about 2 years since I last bothered.

Entertaining ? - I must have missed that bit , today
Because otherwise Susie would be all on her lonesome...
I think they are aware that Suzie, for all her word skills, may not be enough to carry that aspect day in day out, so they have a guest in to 'liven things up a bit'.

I am with melv, they should just keep the camera on Rachel, and forget about letters and numbers, and contestants, and Nick and just look at her ... (sound of door quietly closing ...)

Let me know when Len Goodman has finished his stint, then I'll watch it again.
Come back Andy! You'll go blind, lad;-)
I'll have a phone number please Rachel ....
Without a guest in dictionary corner the show would be rather dry, boring, not to say sterile. The guest spot can be quite revealing too.Just watch how Susie interacts with the guest, and her body language. Some she flirts with, some she engages(wordwise)with, and other she looks as if they are not there. The worst incident of ignoring Susie (and getting bad looks from her) was Jack Whitehall's father. He treated Susie as if she was a menial, with no intellect of her own,but it was fascinating to watch.I look forward to the guest, even if I don't completely like them.
I knew if I hung out long enough I'd find common ground with andy-hughes. :)
Alright for you chaps, you've got Rachel.I don't want Nick Hewer,he's older than my OH.
It’s not a programme I watch these days (or even much in the past), but I recall seeing one show many years ago, where Samantha Fox was the guest.

Since she did not possess more than a dozen working brain cells, I was amazed that she managed to find an eight letter word – it was at this point I realised that the guests were fitted with a hidden ear-piece, over which they were supplied answers.

But didn't she do well?

It has been announced that the overall size of Samantha Fox net worth is as much as 20 million dollars

I like Phil Hammond, he's very funny and perceptive. We all react differently to the guests, I didn't know who the man this week was, apparently he's a dancer, the next one is the guy for whom Rachel broke up her marriage, should be interesting! For me, Nick Hewer is the best compere since Richard (007) Whiteley, I like his dry humour. The 8 out of 10 Cats version makes me cringe for Suzie Dent, she looks so uncomfortable.
It is not the size of her brain that has made Samantha Fox wealthy.
Although getting off message, I recall Richard Whiteley appearing on HIGNFY, in which the host announced that Carol Vorderman had only made one mistake during her career on the show – and that was her salary at 10 times that of Richard’s.

The speed with which the smile was wiped from Richard’s face; clearly something said had irked him.
Watched from the beginning in the 80's until Hewer took over, never bother at all now,the most pompous, boring man I have ever seen.
I'm not mad about Nick either. The way he sucks his teeth just before asking the contestants the number of letters in their words is starting to grate. Can't the sound people cut his mic off for those couple of seconds?
