In the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, they reported that a golfer had "two hole-in-ones" See link below. Surely that is bad grammar, isn't it? It should be "two holes-in-one", shouldn't it? On a recent edition of Countdown, I couldn't believe it when Susie Dent said there is nine letter word there - it's Platefuls. What?!! Surely it's Platesful, like it's Handsful, not Handfuls. Then again, I suppose some people couldn't care less, which is a shame. Hey ho! Now, off for me usual Full English! Byeeeee!

He's certainly the winningest on the day.

Both are correct, 10C - anyway you wouldn't wish to be invited to join the Pedants' Club, would you?

Wouldn't two holes in one imply the ball went in two holes from one shot?

...and Chambers dictionary COULD care less, showing that it's Handfuls (not handsful).  I don't agree with any of your 'bad grammar' examples - sorry!

Looks like somebody's going to have his handsful fielding replies today.

It's 2 'holes-in-one' I'm sure, but 'handfuls'.

words are never broken by the plural 's'

plateful is one word - it isnt plate full  - You can blame Marianne Faithfull for this - she ( apparently they  said at the time) started the rot.

holes in one seems more natural - avoids one pluralised - ones - ugh. OK little ones, pretty ones.... hmm OK

The genitive ( Possessive ) 's can get up and wander around.

The Duke of Bedford's place in shakespeare's time would be the Duke's place of Bedford

words are never broken by the plural 's'

yes, I think that's the rule. But phrases can be, so mothers-in-law and holes-in-one
