This subject was mentioned in another post and it has prompted me to tell you this story.
Once when I was in hospital I was chatting to a male nurse I know quite well. I noticed he had scratches all over his arms and I asked him how he had come by them. He told me he had been out jogging and had run through some shrubbery and been scratched by thorns. I jokingly shook my head in disbelief and accused him of being in the bushes because he had been dogging. The ward sister, who is Indian and doesn't always understand slang, was nearby. After the male nurse had gone, she approached me and said that she had not heard of dogging before and could I explain to her what it meant.
I said the first thing that came into my head, that if you are dogging you are out for a run and have your dog with you. I explained that the word came from a combination of 'jogging' and 'dog walking.'
That conversation took place over 2 years ago and I still have nightmares that the poor woman will end up being punched on the nose for innocently telling someone....who is probably a consultant.....probably in front of his wife..... that she had seen him out dogging.

Naughty, Mrs O. Very naughty. ☺
In Glasgow "dogging" means skipping or "plunking" school. My Glaswegian son-in-law takes a lot of stick from his kids.
Ha ha ha! Priceless Mrs O.
...and I bet that the nurse remembers your name, and where you live!
Mrs_O: I think some parents tell their kids the same thing when they are put on the spot. A few comedians including Lee Mack have told a joke involving dogging (dog walking and jogging). Maybe it was you who set the trend!
saw in Latest Posts - Dogging - Sandyroe and had to look.
thank goodness it is quite a harmless thread. You need to write a book Mrs O as you do seem to have quite an unusual life.
Me and the Mrs decided to have a go at dogging. By the time she'd parked the car everyone had ***-off:)
You mean that isn't what it means ?
How do you clean a monitor ... I've just spat tea all over mine !

grasscarp - I once told Mr O that I felt I had a book in me. His reply was:
"Well whoever lets it out should be hung, drawn and quartered."
Charming!
I still don't understand where the term "Cottaging" came from
Dogging, I understand how the meaning came about.

jd - I believe cottaging came about because quite often public toilets in parks etc look like small cottages
Ok, makes sense. Thanks!!
Lol lol lol I have now choked on my kit Kat.
perhaps on the rare occasion that i go to nottingham greyhound racing i should resist telling doris that i am going dogging ...
woof woof.....love the yarn, your are deliciously barking, mrs overdogg.
At our church one elderly member said very loudly "O yes I'm sure Mr X will be coming in a minute - when he's finished dogging" - meaning the innocent hobby of walking his faithful old dog!!!
And I thought that Dogging was....... A former method of catching wildfowl, using a Duck decoy pool and a small dog.

Shows how innocent I am. :-)

Hans.

Interesting.....I thought that the term "dogging" came from the description of the copulatory act over the bonnet of the car.
^^^^^ not "act" should have said..."position."
