... all we wanted was a pub lunch.

Group of half a dozen thirsty bird-watchers - pitch up at 12:30 at a carefully selected pub (tripadvisor 'best in area' etc etc) - but it was closed. On a Friday lunchtime?? Website says open, door says "come back at 6pm".

So we hopped off to another pub - been there before - nothing special, but OK for beer and food - sign outside says "lunches 12 'til 2" - barmaid says 'come back at 6pm'.

So (in something approaching desperation) we drove quite quickly to a third hostelry - usually OK for beer and cheap/quick food, but not quite what we had planned.

It took nearly an hour to produce half a dozen fish/chips/mushy - during which time the chav inhabitants compared tattoos and thongs whilst their vile sprogs ran riot.

I would say "how unlucky was that" - but then I remembered that the estimable gness was part of the group ...

If she hadn't been all would have been OK.....
>>>but then I remembered that the estimable gness was part of the group

I refuse to believe it!

Publicans who spot Gness in a group don't say "Come back at six".

They simply say "Don't come back", don't they?

;-)

We have scheduled 'Newmarket' for our next outing - that's near you isn't it Chris?

Any recommendations of pubs that might actually be open?

LOL.

gawd, you never let her eat mushy peas did you Dave, you know what happens !.
Newmarket???? No-one mentioned that to me! Was that what you were all whispering about..... and asking me for dates when I'm out of the country?.... :-(
Newmarket. Go on race day. We had a fab time and a meal worthy of royalty.
I think you should all arrange to meet Chris....then bring me along as the surprise......☻
I used to like surprise, Gness ;-)
Can you hear alright now?

I SAID 'CAN YOU HEAR ALRIGHT NOW?'

But Chris is 6ft 8in and I'm 6ft 3in - you could get overlooked :)
Well on the plus side, if you aren't going to Newmarket I'm sure there's room in Edinburgh. Just about.
Sit on my right side, Shoota......that ear hears....the other is on strike....☺

You could both swing me between you then...like you do with toddlers...and i can pick winners if we do as Jeza says.....☺
How tall are you, Jim?...x

Sort of. Newmarket is officially in Suffolk but, to all intents and purposes, it's really in Cambridgeshire. (It's impossible to get into Newmarket from any part of Suffolk without crossing into Cambridgeshire and then back into the tint part of Suffolk that surrounds Newmarket). The racecourse is about 37 miles from here, so I don't know the area very well but I'll try to think of somewhere nice in the area. (Avoid Newmarket town centre. It's depressing!)
^^^tint?
tiny! (and I've not touched a drop yet!)
I could pick you up in my car, Chris.....I'm a good driver.....☺

You'd have to have the sunroof open - those Hondas are a bit tight for headroom :)

Scarey ^^^^
which pub? so I know - there's been a few traded on or closed. Wit quite a nice hostelry in Saxon Street...
Scarier on the bike, Baldric......though I'll give it a go if Chris is up for it...☺

I can't say, DT....they won't tell me... :-(
