Does anyone know the history of why US Army Officers wear a black ring around their sleeves?

All I know is that it has to do with mourning. Hope it helps ya!
i thought it meant off duty but i must be mistaken, aswk ward minter he was one
Nothing to do with mourning - it used to be gold, but was changed to black to match the change of colour to black for shoes and cap visor. Full history here (Scroll down to Section 5.a. 'Black accessories')
