Ian Lavender has died aged 77.  No age these days.  I still watch and laugh at Dad's Army.  Usually on some channel.

E: Oh, incidentally, Baldrick - actors are very superstitious. On no account mention the word *Macbeth* this evening, alright?

B: Why not?

E: It brings them bad luck and it makes them very unhappy.

B: Oh, so you won't be mentioning it either?

E: No... well, not very often.

Just for clarity (and hopefully without being accused of being pompous) "The Glums" on radio was a regular part of the long running series "Take It From Here". The part of Ron Glum was played by Dick Bentley.

Take It From Here ran from 1948, though the Glums were first included in 1953. When it ended in 1960 Ian Lavender was only 14 years old.

June Whitfield played Ron's long-term fiancée, Eth, but most interestingly Jimmy Edwards played Mr Glum, Ron's father. Jimmy Edwards was twelve years younger than Dick Bentley! I suppose you can get away with that on radio!

Yes - radio exercises the imagination. TV doesn't.

As a child I remember being "gripped" by the weekly episodes of "Journey Into Space" - now if you'd told me it was 3 blokes stood around a microphone....
