Food for the heart.

Know any good adaptable food, that's great for the heart and lowers cholesterol? I know someone, very close, to have gone through a major heart operation only to have their life changed concerning food. They're down to foods low in sugar and salt, oat-porridge, green tea etc. Anyone with the same problem or knowing someone have any good recommendations? Thanks.

I think ripe bananas lower cholesterol too.

Foods containing Omega 3 actually lower the bad cholesterol and boost the good cholesterol. This can be found naturally in oily fish such as salmon, trout, tuna, mackerel also in rabbit meat. You can now get 'Omega 3' eggs as the hens have been fed on omega 3 enriched grain. Omega 3 margarine is also on sale. Oh, as well walnuts and I think almonds contain it too. For a full list just Google Omega 3...

Thanks for all the advice. All fruits and vegetables are great, especially avocados. Omega 3 is definately good, although he wouldn't be too hasty with the eggs though, he's good with the oily fish. A lot can be found in research, but when it comes down to shopping for good heart-healthy food, there isn't much to enjoy. Was wondering If anyone knew of any rare products or simple recipes? Thanks again.

I find healthy food enjoyable and once you get into eating healthily you find you turn your nose up at processed foods. The main thing is not to feel you're depriving yourself and do have the odd treat.
What kind of recipes are you looking for?

I myself love healthy food with the occasional treats, but we're all sort of healthy at heart anyway. My dad really has to be strict on himself, cutting down on all the treats he used to love although he cuts down too much sometimes. He seems fine and eagerly adapts to the food so no worries there. If anyone's going through similar heart-strict diets, am curious to know what you eat.
