You watch a football match which lasts 2 x 45 mins and you watch a tennis match which lasts hours. The football players are continually spitting, whereas you never see a tennis player spit!!

there is a fair bit of racquet throwing and banana eating...
Ah banana eating, that is why it is in Food and Drink. Yes I agree, no spitting in Tennis.
but you never see football players chucking sweat-laden towels at children
And water drinking...but at least it all stays in.
Tennis players may be adherents to Ab Editor, and as such better people ;)
I can't say I have but there again I've never watched an entire football or tennis match!

I'm feeling slightly queasy to find this question in Food & Drink......
The tennis players 'gob' in to a big bucket in the Wimbledon changing rooms before they come out on court.

Sharapova is currently the leading 'gobber' with 2 litres which beat Arthur Ashe's previous long standing record of 1.5 litres (but his was produced during a particularly hot and dry 1070's summer).

^ 1970's.
There is a lot of grunting from tennis players. Maybe they do that instead of spit then?
i would rather have a woman grunt than spit anyday.
Sharapova is a heavy grunter during play... she's actually warming up her throat for the final 'top up gob' when she returns to the changing room after the match.
snags, that is digusting, pity the staff who have to empty it out <retch>
too big a job for staff, it's been outsourced to Veolia
McEnroe and Connors used to spit...................
The Williams sisters are famous for gobbing in unison... truly a sight to behold.
That electronic line monitor doubles up as a sputum detector hence, Hawkeye.

I give up..................... I just wanted to know if you'd noticed! It should have gone into Chatterbank but for some reason it didn't! Like I say, I give up!
I thought my answer was quite reasonable................
I agree completely coccinelle. The whole culture of spitting on the football field is disgusting. What really makes me fume is when they show pre recorded highlights and still leave it in there. PS you don't see cricket players spitting either. DISGUSTING!!
