Have been diagnosed (10 days ago) with shingles and forgot to ask my doctor if the virus can be passed to my 8 month old grandaughter when I visit next week. She has not had chickenpox. Does anyone know?

elspeth.............my kids ahve recently had chicken pox, we had some very good answers from the AB users, but i also put it into google and got a web site that was full of answers, sorry i cant remember it but it came up straight away so should be easy to find?

i hope this helps,my brother had shingles years ago and it wasnt a very pleasent experience for him... good luck!!

To be safe and sure phone your GP tomorrow and ask him/her.

It would be silly to miss a visit for no good reason, but you would feel dreadful if she did catch chickenpox.

It depends what stage your shingles are at and where. If it's blistered and they haven't crusted yet than yes it is possible for people who haven't had chicken pox to contract the virus. This might require a lot of contact and you scratching the blisters and then touching people without washing your hands and such. But minimum contact shouldn't really be a problem.

I suffer from shingles at least once a year and my daughter has never caught it from me. She had it finally thanks to school though.

S.

from what i remember they are very contagious go see your gp

Thanks everybody for all the advice. Think I'll have a word with my GP. It's good to know that I am not suffering alone - I am never ill and this infection is a real pain (in more ways than one). But it can't last for ever, can it.............!
Shingles can pass on chickenpox to those who have not had chickenpox. I am 100% sure about this, I have nursed a few patients with shingles and its not recommended that those who have not had chickenpox come into close contact. Covering of any lesions greatly reduces the chance of passing on the varicella virus.

my 9 month old son has just had chicken pox and he was fine, just in case she does get it.
