...at last, I finally get my little house to rent, moving on and upwards and all that, and then it becomes apparent, the Freeview/Digital signal is extremely poor here (I can't even get E4!!) and due to a big tree across the way, which is on common ground, I can't get Satelitte signal - SKY..... Other houses can, just right where mine is, in a slight dip.... its a no go. :-(

A tree wouldn't block a satellite signal.
Get a signal booster. I bought one I think it was about a tenner from Argos and don't have any complaints.

SKY came out twice - a massive mature tree is in the line of the signal path so it does block it.... :-(
A tree will block a satellite signal daffy, we've had our dish moved for that very reason.

Enter your postcode in the box here to see if you're in a Virgin cable area:

A tree WILL block a Sky signal - have had exactly the same situation. When they were putting the dish on the back of our house they realised that a huge tree in the garden backing onto ours was completely in the way. He tried everything and was just about to give up when he found a position right on the edge of our house where he could pick up the signal. He says trees can be a huge problem
We have Virgin because we are surrounded by tall trees. I can't get a mobile signal either.
What sort of aeriel do you have?

If it's a bit old it might be marginal for digital. That was my situation a few years back when we went digital.

I got a high gain one fitted professionally with a mast head amplifier with pretty spectacular results.

Low gain aeriels look like this

high gain ones like this
