Often during the summer when all the windows and doors are open one small fly will start going round and round and then round and round in reverse beneath the central room light .I have noticed this many times over the years and always wondered why?Any ideas?

Do any of your neighbours keep birds as it sounds like the behaviour of the pigeon louse fly.

Male flies use a 'mating zone' and will use a lamp fitting as a reference point. They'll circle within this zone, waiting for a female to turn up. Occasionally they'll settle on the lamp to see if a female is, or has been, there - or maybe just to have a rest.
Just for fun, try this...screw up a small piece of paper into a fly-sized lump, and flick it toward the fly. It'll show immediate interest!

Thank you both for replying.We do have loads of Wood Pigeons visiting our garden so it is maybe that kind of fly.We will also try the trick with a screw of paper.Didn't have a visit from one last night.
