Yesterday, I had lunch and went shopping with a friend. She bought two new pairs of jeans and the said she would wash them as soon as she got home. I said they would feel softer after being washed but she said the reason she washes her new jeans and or trousers is because she doesn't want to 'catch anything from people who may have tried them on previously'!

......and I thought I was weird...... Could it happen?

Nah Tilly.
Never thought of that but I was about to ask do you wash new sheets before using them?
Not really in practice but I suppose you could transport fleas home if by some tiny chance the person managed to deposit one on the clothing, the same goes for body lice.
I think I'll inspect any pairs of new jeans or trousers I might buy a bit more closely now ! especially the crotch area.

I do was new sheets, actually, sibs, because they are always starchy. My friend only washes jeans and trousers. She's ok with other items of clothing.
Question Author
That's the area she is concerned about, Yont. That area you have just mentioned.
I'll stick to ordering on line
No never. Life is too short....
Thats what I thought, Yilly. Especially after Daffy mentioned body lice !.
You could easily catch 'crabs' from trying on clothes in shops. One of my daughters went youth hosteling abroad and came back with crabs she caught off the blankets on the bed.
I don't wash new clothes I buy, maybe I should in future.
Question Author
Daffy, do body lice live in clothes, or just on bodies?

Sibs, even on-line clothes may have been in someone else's home for a few days and then sent back.

Retro......yeuk! How did she get rid of them? I have no knowledge about such things.
tilly it was awful she was only a teenager and it was very embarrassing for her. They live in pubic hair so she had to shave every bit of hair and apply liquid from the doctor.

Thanks, Retro. I had no idea.
My mate washes everything she buys before she wears it. How stupid, you wouldn't be able to take anything back if it didn't fit.
I do enough washing without washing brand new stuff.
I'll wash swimwear and underwear before I'll wear them. BUT I hate shopping, so if i'm buying new clothes it's because of an imminent occcasion, meaning - run out, try, buy, iron and wear.
Body lice can live on fabric for a short time, if someone had tried on jeans, put them back on the rail and then someone else tried them on or bought them within that time then it is possible the second person could pick up the bugs.
Not likely, but certainly possible.
As a teenager I got scabies. The doc said something similar to, we are use to our germs at home so where have you been sleeping you naughty girl. This embarrassed me greatly. I ran from the surgery crying. When I got home I told my mum what was said. Bloody ructions especially when she told dad. Got creams and soaps and it was soon sorted. As was the doc after dad put in his two pennoth. As for where I had slept, it was a sleep over at a friends house.
