Washing Machine Programmes?

her indoors bought a new washing machine recently.
After looking going through the programmes, she selected one to run for 14minutes! Being cynical i said surely such a short programme wont wash the clothes properly, she proved me wrong!
This a huge bonus due the cost of electricity at the moment!
Are you w.machines equally effective?

It can't possibly wash the clothes as long as a full wash. The detergent won't have time to do its job. Most of that time will be rinsing and spinning.

Most washing machines have got a 'quick' wash programme .

14 minutes does seem a tad short , though

Mine has a 15 minute quick wash but items are not properly soap free, conditioned and spun - either you then finish by hand or have to set a 20 minute rinse and spin programme if you want it to come out satisfactorily. It's fine for really lightly soiled or delicate things.

I use a 30 minute wash. For really dirty clothes I use a 40 minute one.

Short washes can use more electricity than much longer eco washes, so keep an eye on your meter.

The manual should tell how much energy and water each programme uses, well worth looking at if you are trying to cut down electricity use.

The biggest way to save money with laundry is to wash at a lower temperature. My wife is also saving money by hand washing clothes that only need a quick refresh and just using the rinse and spin cycle if she wants them to dry quicker

It doesn't take much electricity to rotate the drum. What is more, if you watch a longer wash it spends much of its time just sitting with an occasional rotation.

What uses most electricity is heating the water.

If you use a tumble dryer, that uses much more electricity. Therefore if the washing machine can give a good spin, it reduces the drying costs.

Just looking at the manual for my old machine. The ‘express 20 minutes” cycle uses .3kwh, washes at 40 degrees with a maximum load of 3.5 kg.
The cotton wash uses .34kwh for a 40 degree wash with a maximum load of 8kg.
The quick power wash uses .75kw at 40 degrees, max load 5kg.

The shirt cycle uses .76kw at 60 degrees with a max load of 2kg.

Interestingly the 20 degree cotton cycles uses more than twice as much water, 72 litres, as the 40 degree cycle 34 litres

Well worth checking the manual.
