...Nap = bag (as in 'seize') and the 'a' from the middle ('central') of 'flaps'.

Grab? Don't know much about handbags but it'll bump it up for you.

thanks svejk.

I'm pretty happy with the A (from Aida)
I think it's Napa, soft leather.
Question Author
I think you are correct - thanks.
...Nap = bag (as in 'seize') and the 'a' from the middle ('central') of 'flaps'.
Tote?
From existing clues we had ?AP? When the thematic bit was done, it's NAP?.
Nap as in seize? Only ever seen Nab in this context.
Chambers has Nap, fourth definition - to seize; to steal, relation to 'nab' uncertain.
Thank you,I'm al;ways willing to learn:-)
It was new to me too.
Nac, Is it in the paper version.I could not find it in the online version?

Sorry Graudian, I was enquiring about the Chambers Dictionary not the Spectator Crossword.
Yes, in my edition - the 12th.
Ah!

No problem.

If you are thinking of giving the crossword a go it is a good
one for first timers / less experienced solvers.
Beware though, they can become addictive!
Having over 60 years experience of crosswords I don't think i'ts for me.:-)
