They are the old cassette ones, been passed aroung alot and I am using a twin cassette to make another copy for my friend. I am getting them mixed up . Is there a certain way to know you are taping the right side ? I have already erased side one.

PS. If the original tape still has its tabs, break them off to stop you being able to record onto that tape.

Why not break off the record protect tab on the side you've just recorded.

The tape goes from left to right, so the tab will be top left for side one.
Question Author
Dont see that TBH
The record protect tabs are two small tabs set into the edge of the cassette opposite the edge where the tape is. If you break both of them out it will be impossible to record over the tape (unless you cover the resultant holes with a little selotape). See second image here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_protection
geez oh..............not Spanish tapas :(

I have ruined two tapes now, I cant see anything like you say, I am too old to understand

I am losing the original recording on the cassette, so I have 2 of the same, no idea why ?
Perhaps your tape recorder has auto reverse - which means it will play side 2 without you having to take the tape out and turn it over.

Stand your original tape and the tape you are recording onto upright as per this image

You should see the original has no tabs and your tape will either have them in place or be covered with tape.

You say you have ruined tapes - hopefully you don't mean the originals! If its the tapes you are copying onto they are not ruined - you can record onto them again.
PS. If the original tape still has its tabs, break them off to stop you being able to record onto that tape.
Question Author
It has auto reverse yes
Question Author
Yes I appear to have ruined the originals as when I start off from the beginnings it seems to be two the same
Usually a twin tape has one deck that plays and the other has the recording facility.
Question Author
Yes I believe I know which is which from years ago, but I do not understand why it wouldt tape both sides the same off the original
