Since Microsoft have removed support for xp...what's a good free anti virus that's easy to download....pc is rarely used but want to protect it still...Fed up going down the route to be faced with buy options.....last tried avg took me round the world before I abandoned it...

its avast for me murraymints and its free, it was buenchico who recommended it to me

i use avg it is free

Sandy I had ms essentials but had pop up telling me it no longer worked on xp!

That's the extent of my technical knowledge. I would have said you'd just need to keep your fingers crossed but I see others have come along with good advice. :-)

Hi Minty....You say that you get a bit flummoxed by techie talk. I'll admit that I sometimes get completely confused. I honestly thought that, because there are still a lot of Commercial organisations using Windows XP, Microsoft had extended its MSE availability to them and, all other users, for at least a further 12months.

Anyway , that apart, Avast could be a really good alternative AV programme. However, make sure that all traces of MSE are removed from your computer before installing any other AV programme........Having said that, I should realise that you have been around long enough in AB to be aware that it is unwise to have more than one AV programme, because they will conflict with each other.
