Leaving aside the Pinter-esque proportions of your cynicism, that argument simply doesn't fly.

Dusty Springfield, one of the greatest icons of British pop saw no surge in her career when she was dying of breast cancer, and I don't remember a sudden rush back to the charts for The Nolans when Bernie Nolan was diagnosed.

Popularity in pop may work that way for some people - Kylie is not one of them.
