Can anybody tell me can you replace old type of fuse holder(fuse wire) with a trip switch. Can you just change them over or do you need a complete new consumer panel.

You can buy an MCB with fat pins that will directly replace the fuse wire carrier type. Let me have a little look and I'll get back to you with details...

To comply with regulations best get a qualified electrician. We had ours done the other week, and just listening to them, a lot more is involved than you would think.

Careful.
I have just had a new kitchen fitted, and new sockets were needed. The electrician said that any new wiring required a new fuse box ( the house is only 30 years old) and he charged me over a grand for the work and the box.
Can be done, provided you get a precise match; the electrical wholesaler told me that even the old fuses varied; but you have to remember which way is 'on'. most of them have 'on' on top and 'off' below, unlike a conventional switch ! And, of course, you have to have the equivalent to the fuse you are replacing. I've done it twice; once by an electrician, once myself; but it is really only a stopgap with old wiring. My wiring is 1950s, so the whole house will have to be rewired and pretty quickly.
Dave...if you still have an old BS 3036 fuseboard then you need an up to date distribution board and possibly an update to the main bonding..
...and some more :-)...get it checked.
I doubt it is that difficult, it is a case, after all, of simply disconnecting from the old consumer panel and reconnection to a similar CB to the old fuse on the new. But I don't see how you could turn off the live feed into your place so would be at risk of electrocution or blowing the electricity board's main fuse. I don't think anyone would want to advise you to tackle the job on that basis alone. Get the expert in to swap it over and perhaps check the state of the wiring whilst they're at it.
