Nigel Farage has lashed out at the “Walter Mittys” damaging UKIP as he warned the party’s candidates that they must show more discipline before a series of crucial tests at the ballot box. In an interview with The Times, the UKIP leader admitted that the party had “got it wrong” in the past and allowed in some people who had proved to be “disappointments”. “It’s very natural that a newish party will attract all sorts of people,” he said, admitting that it had not always succeeded in screening out “Walter Mittys seeking a role in politics which, in the end, they will let down not just us but themselves with”. The party was confronted with widespread ridicule this month [The Times]

Is he too late? Why is the Party still doing well in the polls?

CD, remember that if he says "our policies were rubbish", he's effectively saying "so you must have been mad if you voted for us", which is not exactly a good way to keep past supporters happy. He is in effect trying to lose lunatic fringe voters in order to look more attractive to the mainstream.

Thank you, Jim.

jno, in your eagerness to disparage, you clearly didn't take the time to read your own link.
We should be coining a new word when doing down UKip - instead of disparage, we could substitute "disfarage" instead :)
Haaa! Very good. :o)
thanks, jim. As i said higher up the thread, the party are trying to shed their typical (or perhaps stereotypical) supporters in the hope of attracting more mainstream ones. I don't think they will succeed, as the Tories are busy trying to out-Ukip Ukip and Labour don't feel the party is any threat (at the moment).
naomi, I did read the link. I just don't happen to believe it. Marchessini didn't make it "absolutely abundantly clear that he is no longer associated with the party at all" - he merely said he supported Ukip because of its policy on Europe but would no longer give money to it. The absolutely abundantly stuff appears to come from Ukip, trying to keep him at arms' length, not the other way round.

But he won't be switching to the Tories any time soon:

The National Debt under Mr Cameron will increase by £700bn in five years. This is equal to its total for the previous 100 years. Austerity!

jno, Seems he has a lot to say about practically everything, but that said, he confesses that he has no intention of supporting UKIP financially and therefore it’s 'abundantly' clear that the party doesn’t need to keep him at arm’s length. It’s a place he chosen for himself. As I said, your link has no relevance to this thread.
naomi, he's a Ukip supporter. He said so. Why would that not be relevant on a thread about Ukip?

No doubt they're sorry they won't get more cash from him, butthey have the luxury of spending his donations, rebuking him for his views, and knowing he'll vote for them because he's got nowhere else to go.
jno, His deliberations on sodomy were the subject of your link - not his support or otherwise for UKIP.
I'm sure that any deliberations on sodomy will help UKIP in their cause no end ! What a shower !
