When I transferred files, desktop and Internet favourites from my partners old laptop to new one, I copied to a portable hard drive and then onto the new laptop. I had bought a special cable that was said to make it a doddle, but I couldn't get to work! I am not that techie!

I have just bought myself a new laptop and need to do the same, but this time I also need to transfer ITunes etc. I have a feeling this might not be that straightforward, so any advice is appreciated - keeping it simple! Also I can't recall how I copied the Intrernet Explorer favourites, but in this case I have Firefox Bookmarks to copy over. Again any help is appreciated. Thank you

To transfer your Firefox bookmarks you simply need to export them to an HTML file and then import that file to Firefox on your new laptop. My method below assumes that you've got a USB memory stick available but any other method of moving the the HYML file (such as emailing it to yourself from your old laptop and retrieving the mail from your new laptop) will do....

Microsoft have written a program to help you do this called Windows Easy Transfer.

See if that helps

Apple have also written help about how to move iTunes to a new computer

Thanks VHG. I'll take a look. Will that also deal with copying over my Firefox Bookmarks?
To transfer your Firefox bookmarks you simply need to export them to an HTML file and then import that file to Firefox on your new laptop. Plug a memory stick into a USB port on your old laptop. Open Firefox and go to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks. Click on Import & Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML. Navigate to your memory stick's location. (You can choose your own name for the backup if you want to but the default 'bookmarks' is fine). Click 'Save'.

Then eject the memory stick and insert it into a USB port on your new laptop. Open Firefox and go to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks. Click on Import & Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML. Navigate to the location of your 'bookmarks' file and double-click on it. Job done.
