Partial Medial Meniscus Tear.

After receiving results of MRI Scan yesterday, it was confirmed that I have a partial medial meniscus tear which is going to be repaired by arthroscopy surgery. Has anyone had this procedure and if so can you say whether I will have to use crutches for a time after surgery and how long it takes to get back to normal activities. I had an arthroscopy 10 years ago but not for this type of injury. I do have osteoarthritis of this knee.

Usually a day case procedure or an overnight stay depending upon the extent of the operation to the cartilage.

Post operative management will depend upon the Unit, but below will give you some idea.


Use crutches for 1 to 2 days or until you can walk nearly normally.
Elevate your leg so that your ankle is higher than your knee and your knee is higher than your hip.
Put ice on your knee for 20 to 30 minutes 3 or 4 times a day until symptoms have gone.
Bend your knee when symptoms have decreased.
Change your bandage after 4 days and cover the cuts with band-aids or gauze..
If the cartilage is repaired and not trimmed, the doctor may want you to use crutches longer and to not put weight on your leg.

Back to work will vary according to your type of work.....3 weeks____3 months.

Thank you Sqad. Very useful information as Consultant did not mention post op management. As I had pre-op assessment done the same day, I am imagining I should have operation within the next 8 weeks as I understand from the nurse who carried out the assessment that the ECG and MRSA tests are only valid for that amount of time. I have a holiday booked in April so hopefully will have had the operation by then and on road to normal activities. If I don't have the operation before end of February, I shall postpone until after holiday.
