Many thanks, Cruciverbalist! I have been struggling under a misapprehension for hours! I had assumed the word square in the preamble was the one we should use!
Have been away this weekend, and I was looking forward to settling down to the Azed today.
Now I have reached stalemate.
I do not have answers I trust for the italicised 5a, 27d or 32d. The letters I feel confident about in 1a and 33d do not correspond to my crossing letters when translated using the word square. I do not understand how to use the Quinapalus site. I am totally flummoxed. Please, please help to shove me in the right direction!
The word square given in the preamble is only an example crockshard - you need to work out the actual codeword by constructing the correct Playfair word square from the digraphs you have. 1a and 5a supply the hints to the codeword - you need to think Greek (5a has a hidden answer).
Regarding Quinapalus, if you use the example given in the preamble:
Type PLAYFAIR in the plaintext box
Type the encoded version QMNXDNSN in the ciphertext box
Press search and the codeword is produced
Just use the digraphs you are sure of and you should find the result, alternatively you could work it out with pen and paper !
