Which one of these pronounciations is correct. I personally think the latter sounds ridiculous. I would imagine it is how the French might pronounce it but don't think it has any place in the English pronounciation.

On a slightly related subject: it really really annoys me when I hear people pronouncing the letter H as haitch !

Oh yes
Oh well he was indeed pushing his luck with the American Police, lucky escape :0)
True yes.Still funny.
Brainiac I agree totally with you on the haitch thing but also cringe when someone adds a k to words such as somethingk and nothingk.oooooh.
Talking about haitches, 'ere yer go:

Now many people say that us Cockneys 'as a way
Of sayin' just exactly what we finks,
We don't make not no fuss for, to tell the truth, to us
Is nat'ral, just like, well, shifting drinks.
Some likes a 'onest man who not only will, but can
Say wot 'e means and say it plain and plump,
But I've a pal that bluff, why to talk to 'im's enough
To make a bloomin' angel git the 'ump.

Refrain: It's very nice to find a pal as speaks 'is mind
I don't like a bloke wot's under'anded,
But Brown don't care a jot if it sounds perlite or not
I do wish 'e wouldn't be so candid.
How do the Americans pronounce the name (first or last) Herbert?
When I was growing up, herbs were to put in dinner and 'erbs were to put in a spliff.
DaisyNonna I think they pronounce Herbert as we would as they used to say Harry S. Truman,I am of course willing to be corrected,I don't think they make a habit of dropping aitches.
Did not think they did!
The only word I could think of that did not obviously have herb as a root word. That is not herbicide or herbivore etc but still starting with h e r b.
Well years ago, they did a lot of experiments with H-bombs:)
:0) stewey forgot about that lol,at least they know about H.
A lot of Brits have thought I'm Canadian....I've yet to be offended.
;-))
Saint Croy and Noter Daim.

Pass my whuppin stick.
the cockney way and the french/american way sound different although written the same. the French version sounds more like airbs.... Herbs is the English was, with a hard aitch.
Watching Storage Hunters - why do the Americans call it an Armoire? - do they know it's only French for cupboard?
@ boxy...I had to look that up...because for me,armoire is a freestanding piece of furniture to store clothing. I don't think wardrobe came to mean the same until I was quite settled in the UK.
Here is an interesting discussion...with various opinions.

Perhaps they like the sound of it, boxy. "Baton Rouge" evokes more of the sights, sounds, and aromas of the South than the plain old English "Red Stick".
