The whole point is, surely, that you would not need to recognise a billionaire. The woman was a customer, who wanted to look at something for sale......Its not the job of the assistant to assume the net worth of said customer is it?

All those shillings in the Telly add up.
Fond of sacking his horse trainers, too.
I used to work in a rich town in the south east, filled with shops that I couldn't afford to buy a button in. So many of the people coming out of those shops having clearly just spent huge amounts were the scruffiest, unkempt people I've ever seen. You really can't judge someone's wealth on their appearance.
She probably went all "Pretty Woman" on them!!
Evianbaby, quite. Those with true wealth can dress how they like; they don't feel the need to impress anyone. One old Duke of Norfolk was upbraided, for being scruffy, by his wife. His reply was "When I am in London, nobody knows who I am. When I am in Arundel, everybody knows. So what does it matter what I look like?" That's the attitude!

But the old salesman keen to sell my old uncle an Aston Martin (above) may have noticed one thing. The clothes were old and scruffy, but the coat was Savile Row, the hat was Lock's, the shoes were top quality, the watch was an old Breguet; all probably 40 years old and tired, but the old hands can spot that.
^^ Yes indeed.

Interesting and varied comments, great stories. It convinces me it's more to do with snobbery than racism.
I once went to mercedes and wanted to put name on waiting list for new model years ago. Salesman refused and said he had so many on list and walked away from me. I followed him about a bit. In the end he said that he had the demonstrator for sale but I wouldn't want it because it was yellow. I said oh good it will match my aeroplane.
Suddenly he stopped looking at me like something that was stuck to his show and next day it was mine.
Stuck to his shoe ...
