i have some wooden items i would like to paint, can you only use wood type paint as i have been told in the shop, like satinwood paint, or any old paint.
It's a matter of cost, but happy to be guided on others expertise.

Since they're new, em, you shouldn't have to do too much. Emulsion is probably the only one to avoid. That will come off. If you really want to be Mega-sure, then prime first with an all-purpose primer such as "Zinsser"...

Well em, you could try taking pot luck and just paint them, who knows you may get lucky.
Well, from my own experience, I'd say just give them a good wash, make sure all bits of fluff are removed, and paint. Lamps and mirrors are hardly likely to take a great deal of bashing about.
with this spray undercoat, you dont need to sand, just make sure that the surface is free of grease wax and oil. if the item has been waxed or cleaned with spray polish, wipe over with wire wool and spirit, if its just painted then these wipes work well

Sugar soap would be a good thing to wash them with em, probably give the wood a bit of a key as well.
Crossed posts there, woof.

ta for the advice folks, will have a think...
Very nice work, woof.
well that worked! I used ordinary emulsion paint (wall paint) because i wanted to stamp a decoration onto what I painted and gloss paint, even satin finish, doesn't take the stamping ink well. I finished it with PVA glue instead of varnish because the stamping ink was alcohol based so needed a water based protective coat so it wouldn't make the ink run.
thanks Tony, I am a bodger, decide what I want to do, then how to do it, then go for it.
I wouldn't call that bodging, woof. It looks very good to me.
no, I wouldn't either, looks great woof
Thank you. I would say the biggest secret of my success is to buy decent non shed paintbrushes in plenty of sizes.

I think it's worth just going for it and having a litre of "Satinwood" mixed at a local supplier.
emulsion doesn't come off on lightly used items Builder provided you use a "sticks to anything undercoat and then finish with varnish or PVA glue. I bought the zinsser stuff but found the spray much easier to use.
