I saw something in the paper about the Whitby Goth Weekend.

It seems to be an annual gathering. It looks fun.

We are imagining Mrs_O all dressed in black, with black lipstick, wandering down to the town for a cup of tea.

Ahem, good morning all. This weekend has been the mini Goth weekend - the major one is the weekend nearest to Halloween. The Goths bring lots of money to the town and all the B&B's for the big weekend are booked up a year in advance. I have never known any instance of any trouble and they are welcomed. jj, they are. Most of them are professional people and spend a phenomenal amount of money on their outfits.

BTW, the local church near the Abbey has requested Goths not to go in the graveyard as there are simply too many of them taking photo's and making films and the vicar thinks it is disrespectful. The graveyard is also very unsafe - it is the one that is collapsing and ancient bones keep raining down on the kipper house on the street below

I've seen that kipper house. They offer to send them by post. I never fancied that- do they wrap them up really well or does the envelope stink after a few days in the sorting office I wonder

I have the utmost admiration for their outfits, some of them are absolutely stunning and an enormous amount of effort has gone into the planning and execution.

I do think I should put a visit to Whitby on my (yet to be started) bucket list!

Having the cliff collapse under your feet could spoil your weekend. You might drop your fish and chips.

I live in a town populated by complete weirdos, so I'm all in favour of a bit of eccentricity.

jj - if you like eccentrics you would love it here. When I went to the shop this morning I saw one of the locals who was having a game stab at dressing as a Goth but failed miserably. Her outfit was:
Black Victorian dress, complete with bustle - absolutely stunning, but ruined by the accessories - a pith helmet and a pac-a-mac
