Should freedom of speech include to those who call for lowering the age of consent to 12? Or for legalising child pornography? Or should voters be entrusted to reject these policies on their own, as the court has ruled?

"The new party, which was formed in May, pledged to intensify its campaign to remove the taboo on paedophilia which, it claims, has worsened in the past decade after the arrest of the notorious Belgian paedophile Marc Dutroux. In his most notorious crime, Dutroux kidnapped and imprisoned two young girls and starved them to death."

It is a true test of the principles of free speech though. Should ideologies which we regard as frankly repugnant be allowed to be aired, or should we move to ban, censor, repress? I take heart from the fact that they have zero chance of gaining any sort of political power - from the report itself I think it said that the overwhelming majority of even such a liberal...

em - you seem to just be reiterating and confirming what i have already said, so i am not really sure why you seem to be opposing me on my words...

but, no matter, fact is it happens whether you like it or not, and it always will

they do it in other countries - because its legal - they must WANT to do it, and enjoy it, mustn't they?
the legalities here and elsewhere are not my point here - my point is that it is a basic natural human desire that, in some, starts early.

i also did not say lots... that implies 'most'- most do NOT have sex.
i said plenty, that implies 'enough for it not to be very unusual as to be unheard of'
Just spoken to one of my German step sisters and it's actually a bit more complicated and broad than that Lazygun, firstly I got it wrong it's not 5 years it's fine up to anyone being 21 and having sex with someone 14 years old or older. It's also fine for anyone over 21 to have sex with someone 14 or older as long as the person does not pressurise, threaten or manipulate the younger person. If they do it's a criminal offence but the police will only accept a complaint by the young person themselves not from their parents / friends or other interested parties. So voila, I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted either and we have a far lower teenage pregnancy rate and abortion rate than the UK.
@Sharingan - Thanks for the info. I had known Gernany had something like that, but not the specifics.

It is obviously a highly emotive subject, but the Germans seem to be a sober, sensible and law abiding people, by and large.

Personally, I would feel uneasy with the idea that a 21 year old could have sex with a 14 year old - Does not seem right to me, but could not articulate exactly while I feel that.

What is the age of consent in Germany? Have you already mentioned it?
Until 1928 (I think) in this country a girl could marry at the age of 12, and a boy at 14. I presume the boy had to be older to be able to provide for a family.................
It's 14 Lazygun. My boyfriend in Germany is 19 and it's not looked upon remotely weirdly, here it would be like the end of the world and whether we had sex or not he'd be branded some sort of paedophile which is really not the case.
@ Sharingan. Ahh thanks.

Again, out of curiosity- and because I am lazy :) - if the age of consent in German is 14, what would be the age at which people can marry without obtaining consent from a parent/guardian? How about for smoking, or drinking, or driving, or for voting?
You can get married at 18 with no-one's permission or 16 with your parent's permission or if they won't give it you can apply to the court for it. You can drink beer or wines at 14 if with your parents / responsible adult, 16 without them and 18 you can drink spirits. Smoking is 18 but everyone in the world smokes in Germany, and you can drive at 18 soon to be 16 I think and you can vote at 16:)
@Shari So not really all that dissimilar to the UK then. A comparative look at the age of consent across different countries- not just for sex, but to be able to drive, or vote, or smoke, or drink - can tell you quite a lot about that country.

It is interesting to me for instance that in the US you can legally drive at between 14-16, but cannot legally buy alcohol until you are 21, and there are states where the age of sexual consent is 18. And of course, you can legally buy a handgun at 21....
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/advice/factfile_az/age_of_consent

the law as it stands today, irrespective of what some children might want to do. can't find any figures or information on age of consent in 1920's, but it is currently 16 and i don't think that should change any day soon.
We are their parents, guardians, to love and look after, so i stand by what i said that age 10 or 12 is way too young to make an informed decision.
I don't think anyone disagreed with you Em10, I think people just said that some 10 and 12 year olds do have sex and more than actually do, have sexual urges. No-one suggested lowering the age of consent in the UK including me because I have noticed that 14 year olds here and very immature compared to 14 year olds in Germany, so I'm not sure it would be a good idea, although I'm not in favour of criminalising children who do choose to have sex either.
em10 - jeez!

no one has said it is!
not one person here has said the age should be lowered to 10-12!

and also myself and numerous others have also said that they too think 10-12 is too young to make an informed decision - so why do you keep stating it as though people are arguing against you?

you are arguing with yourself!

are you actually reading these posts, and attempting to understand them, or are you just so caught up with your opinion you have convinced yourself you have a cause to fight?

you are just repeating what others have said, but in a manner that implies you think they have said the opposite!

for the last time - the point i was making about 10-12 year olds - as sharinham has also just said - was simply that regardless of what you think, 10-12 year olds have sex and also think about it.
and i also said that just because physically they are perfectly capable of having sex and are often in puberty at that age, mentally they are not ready
what you want or believe or think will not change that.

seriously, re-read the posts.
there is no cause to fight, and if there was it wouldn't be on some internet chat space.
I'm in favour of discouraging ten-year-olds to have sex, I don't think they're ready. Once it happens, which is pretty rare (surely exceptionally rare?!) then it's better though to support them than condemn. In the case of two ten year olds, no-one should get blamed for anything. In the case of a ten-year-old and an adult (18+) the adult really should have known better and it's almost certainly an abuse of trust or position, so there is a criminal case to answer. But not for the ten-year-old.
no, of course there isn't a cause to fight here, because everyone is largely in agreement!
so why keep on arguing about nothing?
