Just been looking through all of the alt codes, And it would appear that a tick symbol is not among them, would anyone know if there is one hidden somewhere please?

There is no cut and dried alt code for a tick symbol. Your best bet is to copy it from Wingdings (last or second-last row) and paste it into a new file. Then, when you need it, open the file to copy and paste into your document. You might prefer to do this using the square root symbol instead of Wingdings tick . I think it looks better. You can find it in Arial font.
It is listed as Alt + 251 but when I try, it comes out as a small printed figure one...¹
