Hi danny- I tried that and came up with PROSE, SPORE and ROPES but I couldn't see the definition.
Is it procedures = ropes so Procedures is used twice?

Thanks again for yopur help, shooty, factor30, and dannyk13. Hope to see you tomorrow, now off to vote for somebody?
to show someone the 'ropes' is to show a Procedure.
Not to keen on the clue myself, but only because I didn't get it : )
Factor. Anagram of ropes + crude gives procedures
I think its an old nautical term F30, to do with rigging

thanks again shooty and a very good morning to you!!
And a very good morning to you also Bryand : )
I think that it comes from "knowing the ropes" knowing the correct procedure.
Hi danny- yes, that's how I arrived at the letters PROES (anagram (crude) being ROPES); but my point is that as I'd already used the word PROCEDURES I couldn't see another word that means anagram, although I am familiar with the term 'know the ropes'
sorry- I messed that up. I meant:

Hi danny- yes, that's how I arrived at the letters PROES (anagram (crude) being ROPES); but my point is that as I'd already used the word PROCEDURES I couldn't see another word that GAVE THE DEFINITION, although I am familiar with the term 'know the ropes'
I think what the setter was getting at is that you can make procedures by an anagram of crude + ropes. That was how I worked it out.
Yes that's how I got the letters but it seems the word Procedures is used twice in solving it.
Maybe that's allowed in crosswords but I'm no good at these once they start getting too clever.
dannyk- I have just realised that the '-----' is actually part of the wording of the clue clue rather than just the stated letter count. I agree that the only possible answer is ROPES. I still think it's an odd clue though in that the word 'procedures' is used in the wordplay and in the definition.
