It's not an easy question because how you are ' kept' depends very much on your catagory- and that makes your experience vary widely- however having spent a considerable number of years in prison in one sentence I wouldn't face a whole life term, I'd rather be dead.

I notice the Chinese woman convicted of murdering the British businessman has been sentenced to life. She won't be complaining. Where's there's life, there's hope.

Thankyou all for your honest and interseting answers (even you Gness, tut), I think I'd got for the life option personally. I chose NOX's answer as best as you can't argue with personal experience.
yes 'life' as a Cat A would be very hard.
