21a orra-man was answered a few days ago. I posted The Orraman a poem by Alistair McDonald which won a prize in 2002
Hi danny - not according to Chambers -

nix...(Ger myth)...usu[i malignant...water spirit (also [i]fem] nixie or nixy)
Apologies for the italics mess-up...
Free on -line dictionary defines nixe as a water sprite. Have googled nixy but not found a connection to water sprite.
The Chambers ref was easiest, but also here -

To confuse matters a bit more. I have checked Collins and Longman dictionaries an both give Nix as a male water sprite and Nixie as the female equivalent. I think trhe correct solution will rest with where the compiler has got his information.
Correct answer for 28a is Nixy. I enter online and it tells you if you have an incorrect answer.
