When did cremations begin in Lincolnshire?

Just been reading Kiki-frog’s post on 10th April about hitting brick walls; well I’ve been hitting this brick wall for about a year now. As a keen family historian, I know I like a mystery, but this is beginning to get a tad irritating now.

I’ll start at the beginning. My Great x3 Grandad Richard Clark was born in November 1827 in Kirkby Cum Osgodby, Lincolnshire. When he died in 1912 he was living in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. On free BMD his death is registered in Caistor, Lincolnshire. (Market Rasen is in the District of Caistor) My problem is I can find no burial record for him. I’ve tried the parish records for every Parish in the registration district of Caistor and he isn’t there. I’ve found where all his 8 children were living in 1912 and checked the Parish Records there, again he isn’t there. I’ve gone back through every Census and checked every place he was registered as living, nothing.

I’m about out of options in the Parish record department I think. I am now wondering if he could have been cremated. I’m given to understand that the first British cremation was in 1885, so it could theoretically be possible. I’ve tried to find out if there was a crematorium in Market Rasen/Caistor in 1912 but have drawn a blank. How are cremations registered? Do they need to be? Is it the same as burial registers in Churches, a register for each individual place? And if so what happens to these records, especially if the crematorium no longer exists? I’ve never come across a cremation within in my tree, except for both sets of Grand Parents and I know when they were cremated and where their ashes are scattered.

Does anyone know which direction I should take now? Thank you in advance for any help and advice given

Market Rasen Town Council is in charge of Market Rasen cemetery so they may be able to help with records, I notice the cemetery was considerably enlarged in 1908. Their number is 01673 842479 available Mon, Tues, Fri between 09:30 and 14:30.

I don't think he'd have been cremated in 1912, and as they'd just increased the size of the cemetery I bet he'll be buried there, hence no parish records.

I'm guessing that this area would not have a crematorium until after 1945. I'd be interested to know if my hunch is right.
