Need to buy plastic chain to enclose an area 45 square metres. How much chain would I need to buy? Must be a minimum width of 6.15 metres wide.
Obviously would need posts as well one for each corner and maybe one or two per side. I have a total mental block when it comes to working out anything like this, should have stayed for double maths instead of skiving.

Quite :)

Though if you went for the minimum width the other sides would have to be 7.32M so yoou'd need

2*7.32=14.64
plus
2*6.15=12.3

12.3+14.64=26.94m

It depends on the shape- if it's square you'll need less than if it's a rectangle.
Please can you tell me the shape and the lengths. Ta

If you have worked out the area as 45 square metres does this mean you have already measured the sides of the square/rectangle - if so then just add all the side lengths together to give you the periemeter
I'm guessing this is a requirement of some type of dog training/display area that states the minimum area and width.
You can get by with an even smaller length of chain if you make a circle!
A circle of diameter of 7.57 metres ( radius of 3.78m) would give you an area of 45 square metres and would need only 23.8 metres of chain

Chuck is right - dog show ring that has to be a minimum of 45 sq mt and with a minimum width of 6.15. Area would depend on the layout of the hall/venue but probably rectangular and this is a minimum. We could have shorter lengths and more posts, but just need to know we have enough for the minimum. So if I got about 30 metres that should cover it?
true, you'd need a cirlce with a radius of about 3.8m so you'd need 11.93M of chain for a circle :)
Yes, assuming a rectangle of the minimum width and area 30m should be plenty
If it has four sides then the actual dimensions don't make *that much* difference. 28 metres should cover (surround) all eventualities.
Yes I agree that 30m is more than enough
I think you need to double your answer for the circle, chuck. Area = 2x Pi x radius (or pi x diameter as it is taught nowadays)
Yeah, I forget to double the radius in that one :)

I did consider removing my own post to save face but that may be an abuse of power :)

Excuse me for butting in but how does one remove one's own post?
You can't AOG. Mods can remove any post they see fit for removal though.
You can email the Ed or report your own post and hope it gets removed, but the only way to do it yourself is if you are a moderator
Thanks for the reply, I didn't realise you were a Mod. chuck.
Shocking, isn't it :)
Will the chain be pulled taut, or will there be a slight sag between the posts, as is often the case with plastic chain. If there is to be a bit of a sag between the posts, it might be best to add a couple of extra metres to allow for this.

Good point, its only for decoration so will probably need to be a bit saggy! Also will need enough if we change venues and have room for a bigger ring next time. Thanks for all your answers. I knew I didn't need to stay for double maths!
