Last night I watched Radio Days by Woody Allen and there was something in the film about a child in America who died after falling down a drain shaft. It reminded me of something in the news in the UK. I think it was maybe mid to late 1970s. A little girl in (I think) Italy fell down a drain or mine shaft and was there for days. The powers that be tried everything to get her out. They even sent down a dwarf guy from the local circus but he couldn`t reach her. The story gripped the news for days and when they finally managed to reach her, she was dead. Does anyone else remember this?

Well not dead, but the most famous case like this

Yes I do remember that SJ, I thought she died too, but on the link PD posted it says she recovered and got married. I remember everyone followed the drama in the same way as we followed the rescue of the Chilean miners (that was a wonderful miraculous escape)
Gosh annie that link was interesting especially the part about the mystery of the harness they found attached to his little body - poor child.
Six volunteers made the attempt to retrieve Alfredo Rampi. The final attempt was by the 4'3" amateur caver Donato Caruso.
I don't remember Alfredo Rampi but I do remember a little girl who was trapped in a water and they tried everything to get her out but she died after a few days. I think it might have been in Mexico in the early 90's.

Thanks for finding that for me. Yes, it was Alfredo Rampi. I remembered it as a girl for some reason and thought it was earlier than 1981. I remember everyone being gripped by the story. What a terrible way to go.
This is the girl I was thinking about. It was after a volcanic eruption in Colombia in 1985.

Just read your link tigger. Strangely, I don`t remember anything about that. It makes you wonder how far the technology to rescue people has devloped since those times.

Very sad. She may have survived if there was a way of digging through the solidified debris she was trapped in.
